Albums:

1. Symphony X - Iconoclast This is such an amazing album. Few bands can actually improve in quality over two decades but Symphony X have managed it with every album.
2. Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn of Events Mike Who?
3. Iced Earth - Dystopia A return to form for Iced Earth with a great new vocalist in Stu Block.
4. Sepultura - Kairos Max Who?
5. Megadeth - TH1RT3EN This won't go down as a classic Megadeth album of course but there are some good songs on it.
6. Thrice - Major/Minor I wasn't a big fan of 'Beggars' or the 'Alchemy Index' CDs but this years album is more upbeat and up-tempo than their three previous releases.
7. Helloween - 7 Sinners More good fun Power Metal from one of the legendary bands in that genre.
8. Hammerfall - Infected This album didn't do anything for me at first but it has grown on me recently and there are signs that Hammerfall are making an effort to change their sound a little.
9. As I Lay Dying - Decas On their ten year anniversary EP they've put some new songs and some covers, but the CD is spoilt by the remixes.
10. Onslaught - Sounds of Violence It's a good thrash album but unfortunately not particularly interesting. 'Killing Peace' was much better but 'Sounds of Violence' has its moments.

Live shows:

1. Iron Maiden, 21st July, Aberdeen This was my fifth time seeing Maiden (and second in two nights) and it was great to see them in a city they haven't played in since the early eighties and will probably never play again!
2. Rush, 14th May, Glasgow It was an odd feeling being one of the youngest people at the concert but the show was great. Seeing '2112: Overture/Temples of Syrinx' was a major highlight of the year!
3. Metallica, 8th July, Sonisphere This was my first time seeing Metallica and they didn't disappoint. Finally getting to see Metal classics like 'Master of Puppets' and 'Creeping Death' was a great feeling.
4. Iced Earth, 5th November, Birmingham Matt Barlow might not be in the band anymore (again) but this gig in a 250 capacity venue was well worth the 600-mile round trip.
5. Slipknot, 10th July, Sonisphere Bar a few songs, I'm not a fan of Slipknot. However I thoroughly enjoyed their headlining set at Sonisphere.
6. In Flames, 10th July, Sonisphere I've waited a few years to see In Flames (which included a cancelled, and not yet rescheduled!, show in Dundee) and they were pretty good despite the short set. More old songs next time please though.
7. Opeth, 10th July, Sonisphere A good band who maybe seem a little out of place at a festival but their set was really enjoyable and a great watch,
8. Bad Religion, 9th July, Sonisphere Good fun at a wet festival!
9. Volbeat, 10th July, Sonisphere I'm not a fan of their music at all but they were a great way to start the day.
10. Megadeth, 8th July, Sonisphere One of my favourite bands, and despite being a little underwhelming at Sonisphere they were better than most of the bands I saw in 2011.

Top 10 albums

1. Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn of Events
2. Anthrax - Worship Music
3. Machine Head - Unto the Locust
4. Sylosis - Edge of the Earth
5. Devin Townsend Project - Deconstruction
6. Trivium - In Waves
7. Skindred - Union Black
8. Mastodon - The Hunter
9. Amplifier - The Octopus
10. Alice Cooper- Welcome 2 my Nightmare

1. Metallica - Sonisphere - First time seeing them, one of my favourite bands, highlight of the weekend for me.
2. Slipknot - Sonisphere - Camped out all day on a barrier, was definately worth it.
3. Dream Theater - Wolverhampton Civic - I was the first in the venue despite only queing for 15 min (very stupid door system there  ) was right infront of Petrucci, DT being my favourite band, not knowing the setlist for first time seeing them was also epic. Saw them at HV the day after but thought they were alot better at civic hall.
4. Machine Head - Wembley Arena - Was just an epic gig
5. Devin Townsend Project - ULU (Addicted! gig) - My favourite DTP album in full!
6. Rob Zombie - Brixton - Awesome stage show, at the barrier again.

These are the top 6 that really stick out for me.
Upcoming:

June 5th - Skindred
July 8th - Faith No More

Albums that made the biggest impression on me:

Devin Townsend: Deconstruction
Mastodon: The Hunter
Lou Reed + Metallica - Lulu
Machine Head - Unto the Locust

Those are really the only four where I sat down to listen to them and felt something beyond "Oh ok, yeah that sounds nice" I know a lot of people hated Lulu, but it seemed unusual in 2011 to hear an album that wasn't geared towards sounding good on an itunes preview, and that tried to provoke a stronger emotional response than 'oh, that sounds jolly'.

Livewise, I didn't get out to that many gigs this year and of the ones that I did see a fair percentage were pretty disappointing. I enjoyed a lot of stuff at Sonisphere, but outside of that the only two gigs that really stood out a great were Crowbar, and Ginger Wildheart's acoustic set, both at the O2 Academy in Oxford.

1. Rob Zombie - Leeds Academy/Download Festival - Fantastic live show - probably the best I have ever seen
2. Slash - Leeds Academy - GnR, Velvet Revolver, solo work, and Snakepit - all covered. And Myles' voice is incredible!
3. Airbourne - Sonisphere - Managed to miss them the other 3 times I've had chance to see them - didn't disappoint!
4. Metallica - Sonisphere - Put on the best setlist they could have ever done for me - and played brilliantly
5. Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Steel Panther - Manchester MEN - £50 well spent
6. Madness - Leeds Fest - So much fun!
7. Alice Cooper - Sheffield Town Hall/Bristol Colston Hall - One of the best live performers out there
8. Goldfinger - Slam Dunk Fest - The perfect way to get me into the mood for Festival season!
9. Skeletonwitch - Bloodstock - Knew nothing at all by them, but they blew me away. Even more amazing considering it was morning when they were playing!
10. Fozzy - Leeds Well - Jericho is an amazing frontman - really knows how to work a crowd
