Comedy in 2014

Postby PurpleDemon » Fri Feb 14, 2014 1:45 am

I guess it goes without saying that 2014 will see Bohemia host more comedy on the Thursday and throughout the weekend, but who's it gonna be this year. We've had a decent mix in the past editions of the festival, but interested in seeing who would get you guys into Bohemia, perhaps even over some of the bands playing.

I've got two personal hopes:

Phil Jupitus
Could easily be the name at the top of the bill. Rock fan, has done sets at the UK festival awards and only lives an hour from Knebworth. Would be one of few must-see comedy acts.

Mick Foley
Shouldn't even have to frakking explain this one. It's Mick Foley. Would be everything the Steve-O set was and so much more.

This is something I've missed if it's true. Would be cool, but I wonder what the capacity would be.

Agreed. It was cool in 2011 as a unique one-off event but I don't want it to become a regular thing as I'd prefer to see bands on the two main stages.

What about comedy bands like Flight of the Conchords? Personally, I wouldn't want them 'cause I don't find many comedy bands funny, but I'm interested in what others think.

In regards to comedy having it's own tent, twitter dude said it's something they were discussing on twitter a while back, and again more recently. So I wouldn't take it as definitely happening, just that it's possible.

But Bill's set was musical? He done a bit of standup in between songs but it wasn't much more than the usual between song banter bands do, and was usually related to the song coming next.

yeah bills set was great and well tailored to the fesival but thats because it was bill bailey and getting him to do it was a unique and great idea that I dont want too see them attempt to repeat like they were going to in 2012, basically part of what made that so great was that it was a truely unique thing.

but even though that was mostly musical i still say theres a big difference between that and say flight of the concords or spinal tap etc.

The news of a seperate comedy tent is brilliant, I didn't like how it was done before, where the comedy was slotted in half way through the day in between bands.

As to Comedy on the open air stages, I honestly don't mind, if Sonisphere can book a massive comedian to play, they have to go on Apollo or Saturn, I don't think it's detrimental either, Bill Bailey's Saturn gig was a huge success, Tim Minchin is far too big for Bohemia, he packed it out when he first played, Saturn was the ideal stage for him and it would have been brilliant.

I think they should put some spoken word acts on the stage as well, Henry Rollins returning, Scott Ian, Charlie Sheen, would be well worth it :D

Henry Rollins is a given. He's ranting at festivals over here every summer.

I enjoyed Bill Bailey in 2011, but it didn't help that it was in the rain and Saturn had sound problems for the whole weekend that year. I agree that I don't want it to become a trend. Tim Minchin was the only one I could have seen do it and now he's unlikely to rebooked in the same slot as 2012, unless they somehow manage to get Monty Python (which I doubt) I don't see there being anyone else who can do it.

Andrew McMahon isn't at Download yet, is he? I guess we'll probably have him.

There is only one act that is required for the comedy area.

The Beards.

Hopefully, would mean I wouldn't have to worry about being there and possibly missing a band elsewhere that I'd actually want to see.

Why are there no dots or like-ies on this forum?

I will predict Marcus Brigstocke for this, on the sole basis that the Sonisphere twitter account is following him.
