Looking forward to these guys. Saw them back in 08, they were good but had Gojira supporting them so had no chance to better thier support.
For above:
Take This Life, Crawl Through Knifes, Only For The Weak, Trigger, Scream, Come Clarity. That should get you started.

Does anyone know why HMV have all of the In Flames albums on pre-order for release in Feb?

Also, if I picked up just one that would give me the best feel for them, which should I go for?

Go for either Whoracle, The Jester Race, or Clayman i'd say, depending what you can get hold of. They are all about equal to each other in terms of 'quality' songs. Check out 2 or 3 from each album before you buy it though if you have the choice, so you know which album you might like best.

To the first question, i can ask my mate who is a manager there next time i see him for you.

Very happy about these.

They were amazing at TOC 2009, but I was let down by the absence of Only for the Weak. Hopefully they'll play it at Soni - it has great live energy from the footage I've seen.

They've released a good 8 hours worth of original material, and there's been a lot of changes so you can't get a good feel from one album, but the album that gives you the best impression of both old and new is Clayman.

Listen to anything on Reroute to Remain. It's their newer sound for certain, but it's definitely their best effort by far. And yes, I do listen to their old skool stuff too! ;)

Yet to properly get into this band..I'll start off with Whoracle, The Jester Race and Clayman.

I'm just gonna ignore everything else though...These guys better be good..

If you get whoracle, Jester race or Clayman you're not going to get a view of what they are like now. They aren't likely to play more than 1 or 2 songs off all three of those albums.

For a more modern feel I'd say pick up Soundtrack to your escape or Reroute to remain

Here's a balanced top 5 that covers all stages of their career:

1) Take This Life
2) My Sweet Shadow
3) Only For The Weak
4) Episode 666
5) Behind Space

Thats the point.I want to hear their actual good stuff first, then see where it all went downhill..

By the way, Jester Race is excellent.I'm going to look into their other albums of this time.

I know when i saw them them in 08 the setlist was heavy on those albums, obviously set lists change though. Haven't heard the new albums yet, and undoubtably will be playing a lot from them, so i'll listen to them closer to the time.

Those are big singles from each era but I'd say there's better songs to represent the sounds. I'd go for:

In Flames, Food For The Gods, Another Day In Quicksand, Cloud Connected, Disconnected

Accessibility...tough to say since almost all their material is sacharrine sweet. But Come Clarity is their blockbuster and Clayman has big tunes.

Songs to expect live:
Pinball Map
Cloud Connected
Take This Life
The Mirror's Truth
Only For The Weak
The Quiet Place
My Sweet Shadow

Clayman

EDIT:

As for my own personal top five...they're beyond the point where an all-time list can be made but here's an attempt:

1. Moonshield
2. In Flames
3. Embody The Invisible
4. Vanishing Light
5. Artifacts Of The Black Rain

and currently:
1. In Flames
2. Starforsaken
3. Bottled
4. Upon An Oaken Throne
5. Condemned

I'd say start with Clayman then Reroute To Remain :)
Only For The Weak is the best starting point I reckon :)

PS, am I the only one who really likes A Sense Of Purpose? :?

I liked that album, it just didn't match up to the rest for me.

I'll see them if they don't clash with a band that I really have to see. Listen to anything from Come Clarity or Whoracle if you need a kick start. New album due soon too... that'll probably fill most of their setlist if the last three times I saw them live are anything to go by.
