You going to bravely take on the role of Kipper for 2013, revising that date every week or so? :P

Just taking everything in to account, Download's pre-sale just starting, all 3 headliners announced ahead of schedule, mumblings on the Soni facebook and twitter, that Thrash Hits link about Soni plugging announcements.

It makes sense for Soni to announce in the next week or so, whether that's confirmation that it's going ahead + dates or everything all at once, the last thing they will want is for Download to get too far ahead.

I'm probably wrong though and will be pissed off in January that we still have nothing

Well, not announcing before Christmas would be suicide IMO. An announcement anytime in October/November would be great.
A pre-announcement announcement anytime now would be fine too :D

Just heard nothing and Download have tickets on sale tomorrow. I know it is REALLY early days, but at the same time if your main rival in terms of sales just announced a set of headliners which are likely to sell well, I think a bit of reassurance should have been made by now. I mean, at least we knew in previous years by this time that there actually is plans for it to happen. We have heard nothing so far. No dates, no real hints from officials...

Exactly. I mean, I don't doubt that Download has announced so early partially to hurt Sonisphere, but whether that's the case or not, it has happened.

there's going to be people buying Download tickets in the next few weeks (or possibly months) before soni announces if it's even going ahead.

I know it's very early days, but if we're not even sure Sonisphere exists at this point, then it probably doesn't. I'm sure everyone has an idea in their head of a date they believe soni NEEDS to announce before, and for me, it's fast approaching.
If they've not announced anything in a few weeks, it's dead. And by announce, I mean a concrete announcement, dates (and probably some bands), just some twitter saying "don't forget about us" or a facebook message saying "who would you like to play 2013" or something.

We've not heard rumours from media about it, or anything. We don't even know what weekend it would be on at this point

There was that Thrash Hits thing as well as on twitter/facebook saying there will be lots of Sonisphere's next year, must mean something is happening surely.

The main point is that a lot of people are still talking about it, it hasn't been forgotten about. There will be a lot of buzz if they build it up slowly, will it, won't it *BANG*.

I disagree, I think the longer it goes on, the worse it is. it's not building anticipation, it's losing ground.
Rightly or wrongly, it's tainted by this years failure, and the longer they take to announce, the harder that will be to forget.

plus, I'm sure Soni know all of this full well, and will have done everything in their power to get things ready for an early announcement if possible. That they haven't (or don't appear to be close to managing it) doesn't look good to me. There's still a few weeks left before I'd call it dead and buried, but we've heard almost nothing so far.

I really hope I'm wrong, I love this festival, and want it back.

You make fair points, I think I said before that I expect dates in the next fortnight and a band announcement before Xmas, any less than that and I think it's over unless they have monumental headliners like Foo's, Green Day, RHCP, Muse etc.

I think if they do have something, it will be huge. Let's not forget that in 09, out of nowhere they announced Linkin Park and Metallica in arguably Download's strongest year.

I think no matter what they book they'll make a loss next year, seeing as people still won't want to book unless it get's cancelled again.

If that happens, I think we'll be fine, and I'd like to have your confidence, but we'll see.

And I agree with Ross, theyll struggle to break even next year. They'll have lost a lot of ticket sales after this years problems. 2013 will be as much about rebuilding faith in the brand for future years as it is about being commercially viable.

Which is another reason why I think it might struggle to return. We know they were having problems with financial backing when it collapsed, can you imagine team Soni asking for backing with the opening line "Ok, so we cancelled and lost a huge anount of money in 2012, we'd be pleased to break even in 2013, but by 2014 we should be back doing well. Can we have several million pounds please?"

So much depends on the line up, if its good people will quickly forget about last year.

yup, if good bands are booked. people will go. their biggest struggling point will be convincing acts to sign up in case of cancellation but as soon as they have headliners thatll be enough for most bands

I would imagine they'd be confident enough about it going ahead this year to be able to put huge clauses in for the bands in case it does get cancelled again.
