Best live bands?

Postby MetalMan » Thu May 08, 2014 7:50 pm

Opinions on who are the best live bands? I've seen a lot of gigs, but mostly just the same old bands, wanna find some new bands to go and watch. My opinion on the best live bands are Iron Maiden, Saxon, Alice Cooper, Bowling for soup & The Wildhearts.

A number of bands I would highly recommend checking out/seeing live:

Kvelertak, Letlive, Converge, Gojira, Honningbarna & Mastodon.

I'd say Kvelertak have been my favourite band to see live, though Letlive's frontman alone could beat any band's stage presence any day.

I haven't seen Gallows with the new singer but they were always amazing live with Frank Carter; apparently they're still just as good. Best band I've ever saw at a festival were Weezer at Sonisphere 2011. Everyone tells me how good Skindred are live, but every time I've saw them they've just been okay, but maybe the times I saw them were off days.

Ah yeah, Skindred have been pretty great whenever I've seen them. But it's been so long I'd forgotten.

Unfortunately Benji from Skindred tells the same stories/jokes every time they play which just makes them irritating! They need to take a long break of around 3 years and then come back fresh.

I think Rammstein are the best live band.

Skindred are boring as frakk.

Yeah, every single time I have seen them it's been different. Type of band I see every time and genuinely believe they will harm themselves by the end of their set. Not seen it yet, except from having the power cut on them.

I stick by what i have said for the last few years , skindred are the best live act I have seen , in my humble opinion

the best gig i ever went to was thin lizzy in Leeds in 1983 , 16th birthday and met Phil , I know i can never beat that !!!!

the banter was different when i last saw them , granted the festival appearances were pretty similar in that respect but the performance and energy have always been exceptional.

For me (over the years ) the best have been (in no particular order) :

NiN
Gojira
Rammstein
Ian Dury and the Blockheads
Richie Blackmores Rainbow
Thin Lizzy (classic lineup with Robertson Lynott Downey Gorham)
Devin Townsend Project
Mastodon
Isis
Heaven and Hell
Hell

Bizarrely the most disappointing
Queen (Mind you that was a free concert in Hyde Park )
Eric Clapton (and that was just post Ocean Boulevard)

Yeah alright some of those you couldnt possibly see now but I'd certainly recommend Gojira and Rammstein and DTP

Some bands put on brilliant shows, but aren't musically brilliant in doing so. The best band I've ever seen looking just musically is Radiohead. Simply phenomenal.

The Hives always put on a great show. Their music isn't necessarily the best going, but it's just awesomely good fun to watch. Likewise with Me First and the Gimme Gimmes.

Other people that deserve mentions:

Devin Townsend
Pearl Jam
Kvelertak
Arcade Fire
Stoppin and stayin, I would if I could

Rammstein for me, undeniably the current headliner at any festival.
Airborne, Korn , Motörhead always good gig

Ok i'm going to make a proper list now.

Musically - As tight as they are on record. Literally no mistakes or sloppiness. Even on the vocals (so that excludes Megadeth  ).

Iron Maiden
Gojira
Meshuggah
Alice In Chains
Nine Inch Nails
Biffy Clyro

Visually
Rammstein
Nine Inch Nails
Meshuggah
Slipknot

and some good all rounders..

Metallica
Devin Townsend
Mastodon

Oh gooseberry how could I forget Dillinger!

Saw them a few years back. My friend decided it was a good idea to be down the front.. 1 minute into the first song the singer jumped off the stage and his knee went right into my friends face. He had to miss half the gig as a result

Crazy, crazy band. The energy they carry onstage could easily outdo slipknot.

I think I heard one time that the guitarist nearly broke his neck from headbanging too hard.

Devin Townsend
Green Day
Iron Maiden
Metallica
Nine Inch Nails
Queens of The Stone Age
Muse
Rammstein
Babymetal (I'd love to see their actual properly set-up stage show though)
Gojira
The Prodigy
Opeth
Anathema
Immortal
Triptykon
Dropkick Murphys
Pendulum

These all vary in reasons from energy, stage presence, musical tightness and visual appeal.

I really enjoyed The Bronx at Sonisphere actually. They're definitely the type of band this festival needs more of!

I'm still desperate to see TDEP and Kvelertak :(
