That is a very bad clash, between A7X, Offspring and Opeth I would be pissed as the other two main headliners are gooseberry imo

I must be in the minority that hoped it would be a greatest hits set, still would see them over the other 3 Friday headliners

It's a weird one, Smash is my favourite Offspring album, but I've not seen them in so long I dunno if I'd prefer a greatest hits.

Oh yeah, according to Wikipedia it's a 45 minute album, and that includes a secret track, so assume its just under 40. They'll have what, 75 minutes?

Still though, it's not an album I'd kill to hear live, there's a couple of filler songs on there. You're not telling me you're excited to hear Killboy Powerhead or Something To Believe In, for anything other than the novelty/"I was there" factor are you?
They're no doubt gonna have to miss a classic or two off to make way for those. It's not like "Earth Vs the Wildhearts" or "Troublegum"

Just looked at the full download lineup for the first time in ages, and it's not too bad actually. there's a lot of bands lower down the bill who I'd be happy to see. If Soni wasn't on this year, I'd still be buying a ticket, and there'd be enough there to keep me interested, but I can't afford/spare the holidays for three festivals in a year.
Could do Skindred - BLS - Flogging Molly/second stage onwards Friday, B4S - KsE - Wildhearts - Linkin Park Saturday, Sepultura and Phil Anselmo Sunday (plus a couple of other bands I'd probably see to fill in the time/if clashes allow, Steel Panther, Monster Magnet, Orange Goblin, Sabaton, Black Dahlia Murder, American Headcharge, Zebrahead).

There's a few bands I'd have at soni for sure given the chance, but I'd be more upset if I'd picked DL over Soni.

Download has some great bands (and bands that rarely tour so have that extra pull for me) but I end up with some periods of doing nothing.

Friday: Powerman 5000/The Answer/BLS /BR/Offspring
Saturday: Fozzy/Bury Tommorow(I suppose)/ WSS/BFS/KSE/Monster Magnet/Wildhearts/Twisted Sister/Behemoth
Sunday: Buckcherry/Sepultura/Sabaton/Volbeat/Against Me/Aerosmith

Not really worth £200 plus travel  but the chance to finally see the Offspring, TWISTED SISTER, Sepultura and AEROSMITH is one heck of a draw

Secret act then. My thoughts are it being Machine Head and their late year tour being announced the same weekend. Especially with their small tour thing.

Yeah, same for me. Sunday is abysmal with Feed the Rhino, Alter Bridge and Dillinger the only acts I'd want to see. The potential for Drenge and Royal Blood to clash is frakking stupid, as they're the only two bands I'd be interested in seeing between Turbowolf and Letlive, and two of just six bands I'd be interested in seeing that day. The other two, Avenged and Offspring, clash as well. frakking typical.

Download's lineup is a case of finding diamonds amongst the rough, but there is far, far too much rough to warrant a £200 ticket.

Hell, even Isle of Wight is more consistent this year. Luckily, that's where I'll be.

Think people are thinking it's BFMV. Seeing as it's someone "not in a touring cycle makes it likely to be a UK band, and it's someone big/arena sized but not massive, so suggests not a headline act. It's almost impossible for them to miss a Download :P

You missed out the words "The Awful" which has to be tacked onto the start of "BFMV". I guess that these days it's pretty much just implied but it's still nice to stick to the proper terminology.

Yeah, I think it has to be a UK band. People on the DLF are saying Lamb of God, which seems nuts to me. That band is flat broke since Randy Blythe got caught assassinating Polish bannermen - no way would they schlep over to the UK for a secret set. They're going to be grabbing every big payday they can. They have to. Machine Head is an outside possibility, but the club tour is probably going to cost them a fair wedge. Unlikely that they'd compound that by flying over specially for what's surely going to be a reduced-fee type deal. I think BFMV is a safe bet.

Would DL pay extra for a band to remain anonymous? By staying un-named they lose out on drawing their audience to the fest and I imagine the more casual fan at the fest won't buy as much merch. If there is no incentive for them to remain anonymous why would a band not leak it by "accident"

It's more the placing - a third stage slot will never have the budget of a mainstage slot. A band might do it for the fun of it (as Metallica did), but it'll be a lighter payday for sure. As for paying extra for anonymity - can't see that happening. After all, it benefits the festival to have as many big names on the poster as possible - paying bands to stay off the adverts is screwing yourself in the arse and the mouth at the same time.

The only way I can see these secret sets comign together is the band saying "Hey you got a slot for us at Download" "No - unless you want to play third, lol" "Actually that would be pretty fun - can we do a secret set" "Sure, but you get third stage rates" etc. The band's motivation for not leaking is simple- if they're doing it for sh!ts and giggles, leaking it spoils the fun. It's more likely, therefore, to be a UK band, just because it's an easy and cheap frivolity when you don'thave to fly over, but a massively expensive indulgence if you do.

Unless a band can afford to do it why would they? They won't get much exposure (if they are playing 3rd stage you'll get the odd curious person) or merch sales for playing secretly, a band like Metallica could afford to it but I think that would rule LoG out. DL would have to give them some kind of added incentive, maybe Livenation agree to promote a tour more than usual?

I am liking some of the guesswork on the DL forums, the bigger name being suggested are amusing

Foo's
NiN
Greenday
Sabbath

I can totally see all of those playing mid after noon on the 3rd Stage with.... oh wait I lie

EDIT: also I like how many people are saying it will be big because AC said he will only book secret sets again if its a big act. He could book a turd in a bap and he would say its a big deal, he is hardly gonna book someone and then say they are gooseberry but he had no choice. This is the same guy that says this years Subs and Headliners are on par with the last two years.

It's gotta be Van Halen, AC loves em.

Though I think it's Korn, keeping it secret because of that "only UK show" thing
